Five Pints, Five Stages: The Cowley Road Route That Ends at 3am (Trust Us)

Right, freshers. Welcome to Oxford. Yes, it's a city of dreaming spires, but the dreaming mostly happens after 11pm down Cowley Road — and if you're still doing your drinking in the city centre, we need to have a word.
This is the route we wish someone had handed us in week one. One night. Five venues. Zero regrets (well, maybe one, but that's what the bacon sandwich tomorrow is for).
7:00pm — The Wheatsheaf: Brains Before Beers
Start at The Wheatsheaf, the little gem tucked just off the top end of Cowley Road. It's compact, it's cosy, and the pub quiz here is a genuine institution. Teams squeeze in early, so rock up for 7pm sharp to bag a table.
The quiz itself kicks off around 7:30pm. Pints sit around the £5 mark, and there's usually a cracking acoustic set or open mic once the quiz wraps — this is an intimate room, so you'll be inches from the performer whether you like it or not.
Insider tip: The Wheatsheaf comes alive on quiz and folk nights. On a random Tuesday it's quiet; on the right night it's the best-sounding small room in Oxford.
8:45pm — The Jolly Farmers: Chaos, But Friendly Chaos
Five minutes up the road, The Jolly Farmers is where the evening loosens its collar. One of Oxford's longest-running LGBTQ+ friendly pubs, it's loud, warm and completely unbothered by your dancing.
Drinks are student-budget friendly — expect doubles for under a fiver if you catch the right offers. Don't linger too long, though. This is a pit stop, not a destination. Yet.
9:45pm — The Cowley Retreat: Regroup, Refuel, Argue About the Quiz Score
By now someone in your group is hungry and someone else is claiming they definitely knew the capital of Kazakhstan. The Cowley Retreat solves both problems — proper food, a beer garden for the smokers, and a reliably good jukebox.
Pints hover around £5-£5.50. It's the breathing space your legs will thank you for later.
10:45pm — The Library: The Gig Before the Club
Here's where the night stops being a pub crawl and becomes a music crawl. The Library is exactly what it sounds like — a small, bookish-feeling venue above a bar that hosts some of the best new bands passing through Oxford.
Gigs here run £8-£15 on the door and bands usually finish by midnight. Check listings before you commit to this route — if the bill's good, this becomes the highlight of your night. If not, skip straight ahead. We won't tell.
12:00am — The Bullingdon: The Main Event
Every crawl needs a finale, and the Bullingdon (or 'the Bully' if you're local) is it. By midnight the big room is heaving, the DJs have taken over, and anyone still standing has earned their place on that dancefloor.
Entry is usually £5 or less before midnight on student nights — another reason the earlier stops matter. Drinks are venue prices, so pace yourself accordingly. The Bully doesn't really get going until late, which is precisely why we've saved it for last.
The Rules of the Road
- Cash for the quiz. Some of these pubs still run on it.
- Eat at stop three. Future you is begging you.
- Cowley Road is safe and busy but stick together — phone signal in the venues is patchy at best.
- The last buses run before you'll want to leave. Budget for a taxi home from St Aldate's.
Why This Route Works
Because it mirrors how Oxford actually drinks: it starts quiet and conversational and ends with someone doing karaoke badly at 2am. Each venue does one thing brilliantly, and no stop outstays its welcome.
Freshers, screenshot this. Second-years, you already know. See you on Cowley Road — first round's on whoever loses the quiz.
